FACL BC Presents “but I Look Like a Lawyer” Documentary November 5th on Zoom!

The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyer’s of British Columbia (FACL BC) would like to invite all members of the legal community, whether you are a law student, senior member of the bar or a member of the judiciary, to attend the premiere of our documentary, But I Look Like a Lawyer, on November 5th, 2021 at 12:30pm (PST) on Zoom.

FACL BC is a diverse coalition of legal professionals established in 2011. We are an organization that has always had the principal tenants of promoting equity, justice and opportunity for Asian Canadian legal professionals. Today our coalition has grown from a handful of members to being an organization of 420 members strong. It is these principal tenants, the alarming rise of racist incidents against Asian people across North America, including British Columbia, and the growing awareness of the disparities between minority legal professionals and their counterparts which has always been present in the legal profession that has motivated our organization to produce the documentary, But I Look Like a Lawyer. But I Look Like a Lawyer, shares personal stories of discrimination, stereotyping, and bias experienced by members of the Pan-Asian legal community in British Columbia from every level of experience and practise area. It aims to increase inter-cultural awareness and competency, and to surface the complexity of the history, socio-economic, and colonial aspects of these real lived experiences of Asian Canadian legal professionals.

Our documentary also strives to highlight and bring renewed attention to the original But I Was Wearing a Suit Documentary (and its Part II), spearheaded by a group of leaders in the Indigenous legal community, including Justice Ardith (Walpetko We’dalx) Walkem, who has generally provided guidance for our initiative.

Our premiere will be held online, via Zoom, with concurrent live streams to Facebook and YouTube.

BC law students are welcome to attend the following in person livestreaming locations:

  • Allard School of Law – Franklin Lew Forum (Room 101)
  • Thompson Rivers University, Faculty of Law – OM 3782
  • University of Victoria, Faculty of Law – FRA 265, RSVP required: Contact commcapi@uvic.ca

Following the documentary showcase, we will host a virtual fireside chat with leaders in the Pan-Asian legal community.

This event will be eligible for 1 hour of CPD credit in British Columbia.

Register here and we look forward to seeing you all there!
